Despite its easy reading, the contents are firmly rooted in science. The references are concise and well-chosen, ensuring that the content is of high quality and will be read not only by students of dental medicine but also by others involved in the biomedical or even the socio-humanistic fields.

This ambitious textbook edited by M. Vodanovic and K. W. Alt and containing chapters contributed to by more than 70 authors is an attempt to introduce the Essentials of Dental Medicine to first year dental students. It succeeds admirably! I believe that although this work is developed for first year dental students at the University of Zagreb it has the potential to have a far greater appeal. Not only to dental students in other countries but also to high school students contemplating a dental career.

The Editors are to be congratulated on bringing together a comprehensive overview of dentistry, intended for students entering and in the early stages of their dental studies. The authorship of the book is extensive, yet style and format are consistent throughout. Limiting references at the end of each section to key citations and the inclusion of self-evaluation questions is highly commendable. Overall, the editing and presentation of the text has been completed to a high standard. This book will be a valuable addition to existing literature and a great aid to first- and second-year dental students to gain an overview of the scope and complexity of modern dental medicine.
